BEING OUT THERE

DOP // ART-DIRECTION // CONCEPT // CAMERA // DRONE // CUT // EDIT

Since I was a child my family would drive to france with our van. France's atlantic coast became my second home ever since. So almost every year I drive there again. Every time I meet a lot of likeminded new friends and get beautiful footage so I wanted to make a tribute video to van life.

While working on it a lot of time went by - yes I procrastinated, had a busy life, got lost in details of clips that I later would delete completely, my voice artist was on another continent etc.
BUT more importantly – I lost the motivation to work on a “promotion” for van life and “just another travel video” - it did not match my vibe anymore — I don’t want to be part of the problems it brings nowadays.

I want to do change the things for the better.

I wanted to give the video more sense, a critical view, show what van life is about and give
motivation and ideas how and what to change.

after 3 years in the making I finally present to you "being out there"

This project was hard to finish for many reasons:

one reason would be my talent to procrastinate

another reason will be my busy life full of traveling, festivals and "being out there" doing whatever - paired with my famously whack time management or how I like to call it – too many hobbies and too much motivation for too less time.

Another serious reason will be that the meaning of the video has changed over the years.

– in the beginning it was supposed to be an "add for van life" – even finished a a voiceover for that – but after traveling more in my van I realised how man van lifers there already re and sadly many that do not deserve that term und by that "van life" has gotten a bad reputation – for good reason, sadly. So I did not want to promote van life in anyway anymore and thought I got the chance to talk about the roots of van life.

– for this I needed more footage — don't preach what you don't practice.

– footage of me cleaning for example, never thought about filimg me before doing that before. Also while on the way I made lots of new footage, so the video developed further, sometimes coming back to the project after 4 months thinking "what the F*** did I do there?!" and the newest footage in there feels like a foreign body.

Happy to have finished it by now and looking forward to my next projects.

GRATEFUL for any feedback – video, edit, colours, spots, wording, meaning, van life, resourceful travel, whatever :) hmu here or on insta

Dicki and phil

biggest thanks ever to the strangers that became friends, that I am still seeing every now and then. They helped me with their cameras and drone. It was pleasure with you guys - every evening while drinking and smoking, having a look at the crazy stuff we did that day in the lovely footage we got :) – often listening to beautiful music – coming to the obvious music choice for this video.

I am not making fun of the french people nor the language. I love the french and basque country, it has become my second home for a reason. But if someone feels threatened by a drone miles away I would allow myself that joke.

Yes, this is more a travel/surf Van Life video and perspective. I do not life in my van full-time BUT spent a lot of time in it travelling and living in many different countries and environments (not just warm beaches) and talked to many people living in vans or locals about their experience, so that I allow myself an opinion on this topic.

there are way more experienced van-lifers out there, but I wanted to share my story and my experiences of van life and how it helped me get grounded and gaining more respect and gratefulness for nature and realised – here on earth – we are the guests.

Doing it the right way, it might help everyone.
